Trump – Medicare Should Negotiate Drug Prices
According to Donald Trump Medicare should be able to directly negotiate with pharmaceutical companies in order to lower drug prices. The move is surprising coming from the Republican presidential candidate. The policy has been heavily backed by Democrats, but opposed by Republicans.
Trump believes the policy could save billions of dollars, but is adametely opposed by pharmaceutical companies.
Democrats including Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and President Obama have all called for the policy as well. Medicare is currently banned from negotiations under the 2003 Medicare prescription drug law.
Trump continues to stray from Republican ideals regarding healthcare policy. He also supports single-payer healthcare, a long-time dream of liberal democrats saying, “As far as single payer, it works in Canada. It works incredibly well in Scotland. It could have worked in a different age.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs currently negotiates with drug-makers to lower the cost of prescription drugs.
Drug lobbyists worked hard to prevent negotiations, but benefits from the constant stream of customers delivered to them via Part D.
Others argue that negotiating with big pharma isn’t the answer. The Hill contributor Joseph Gulfo argues that the solution is deregulation from the FDA, “What we are seeing here is an out-of-control regulatory paradigm and the real solution lies in evaluating the FDA’s current system of drug development regulation and approval and removing barriers to creating highly competitive markets that would promote lower prices.
A decrease in the price paid by Medicare recipients for prescription drugs could lead to less research and development by pharmaceutical companies directed towards drugs for seniors.
According to data compiled by the FDA there is currently a backlog of about 4,000 applications with a wait time of 27 months.
